With more than 150,000 enrolled members, the Sakochee People are the mixed-race descendants of Native Americans. Generally, a member of the Sakochee does not qualify for enrollment with their ancestral Native American tribe due to many factors, such as blood quantum or lack of records. However, some Sakochee retain their ancestral tribal enrollment.
While most Native American tribes do not accept a DNA test for enrollment, the Sakochee allow the use of DNA test for proving Native American ancestry.
The United States government does not recognize any Native American descendant tribe, as the government would likely be liable for trillions of dollars in reparations to the Sakochee and others. This would be because the mixed-race descendants of Native Americans often were forced to assimilate and had their land stolen and illegally sold. Then the government implemented blood quantum laws for determining tribal enrollment. This way, the pool of people available to lay claim to the land that was stolen dwindles ever so.
In 2015, in an effort to gain federal recognition, the Sakochee Tribe renounced all rights to land rights and monetary claims if they gain recognition by the US government.
The Sakochee Tribe is fully self-funded and receives no support from either the State or Federal governments. As our land was stolen from our ancestors long ago, we have no land for our reservation. The government has discarded our People for far too long. We have plans to establish a reservation/ranch/farm near Eugene, Oregon. However, as we have no assistance from anyone, it will take us some time to buy a suitable piece of land.
